The Gory Cartoon Film Ending That Stays With Audiences
Out of every adult-oriented animated films I have ever viewed, no other has stuck with me quite like the dread-soaked finale of a graphically gory and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spanish writer-director developed a dark, melancholy and often savage universe that included several minor , forlorn hints of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars appears as it came from an impulse to push the medium even more, the director explained that it was rather a try to convey a widespread, cross-cultural message regarding “the mutual source of all wars.”
That message is communicated through a squad of colorful pastel bears , clearly modeled after a famous series of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a community focused on aggression as well as the war machine, many of these animals are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, because of a sacred text that claims them they were once kings of the woods, before these creatures drove them out.
Some have not completely bought into the brainwashing, , choose to try out drugs or mate in the woods.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these colorful critters show sexual organs and definite urges.
For a certain especially vicious, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the battle with unicorns transforms into a road to control — and particularly to authority over his gentler, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
Bluey behaves aggressively , an obvious psychopath , and while horror overcomes his squad and kills his comrades individually, he grabs more and more influence personally, in increasingly gory, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are experiencing their own nightmare, as a spreading, deadly beast in their forest.
“Initially, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker commented. “Yet it evolves into a more intense and sorrowful movie. And ultimately, it becomes a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars commences resembling one of the more quirky films from a renowned filmmaker, which find a mischievous joy in letting animated figures curse, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it becomes closer to a bleaker film by that same artist, including ever more visual gore , a palpable link to the real horror of battle.
Ultimately, it’s a complete theatrical horror massacre.
The fear that turns the film an ideal spooky-season movie begins much sooner than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated fans of gore, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who wish to view a film they have not viewed until now, and who can handle a narrative that pulls absolutely no punches.
Watch it in a dark room without any distractions, and the conclusion will burrow under your skin and take up residence there.
