Texas Top Legal Officer Files Lawsuit Against Acetaminophen Manufacturers Regarding Autism Assertions

Judicial Case
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump campaigning for US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of withholding potential dangers of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Paxton is taking legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen, claiming the companies withheld safety concerns that the medication posed to children's brain development.

This legal action comes thirty days after Former President Trump publicized an unsubstantiated connection between taking Tylenol - alternatively called acetaminophen - while pregnant and autism spectrum disorder in young ones.

The attorney general is suing the pharmaceutical giant, which once produced the drug, the only pain reliever approved for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which presently makes it.

In a declaration, he stated they "deceived the public by gaining financially from suffering and pushing pills ignoring the dangers."

The company asserts there is insufficient reliable data tying Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These corporations lied for decades, knowingly endangering numerous people to boost earnings," Paxton, a Republican, said.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "seriously troubled by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also stated it had "consistently assessed the pertinent research and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a verified association between using acetaminophen and autism."

Groups acting on behalf of doctors and medical practitioners agree.

The leading OB-GYN organization has stated acetaminophen - the primary component in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for expectant mothers to address discomfort and fever, which can present significant medical dangers if not addressed.

"In over twenty years of studies on the consumption of paracetamol in gestation, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the use of paracetamol in any period of pregnancy leads to brain development issues in young ones," the association commented.

The court filing mentions latest statements from the previous government in arguing the medication is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, the former president raised alarms from medical authorities when he told pregnant women to "resist strongly" not to use Tylenol when unwell.

The FDA then released a statement that physicians should consider limiting the usage of Tylenol, while also stating that "a direct connection" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in young ones has not been established.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who supervises the Food and Drug Administration, had vowed in April to undertake "extensive scientific investigation" that would determine the source of autism in a matter of months.

But experts cautioned that discovering a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - believed by scientists to be the result of a intricate combination of genetic and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism is a form of lifelong neurodivergence and condition that influences how persons experience and engage with the surroundings, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, Paxton - aligned with the former president who is campaigning for the Senate - claims Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the evidence" around paracetamol and autism.

The lawsuit attempts to require the firms "eliminate any commercial messaging" that asserts acetaminophen is secure for pregnant women.

This legal action echoes the complaints of a group of mothers and fathers of children with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD who sued the makers of acetaminophen in 2022.

A federal judge rejected the case, saying studies from the parents' expert witnesses was inconclusive.
