Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Characters

It has been established that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Iconic Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.

"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.

"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fans

Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.

"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Run High

While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange communal scenario. The chance of a self-referential story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.

Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
