Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became public.

He stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their development".

The former Harvard president, who once led the prestigious university, stated on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed communications revealed that Summers exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the technology organization said it understood the economist's choice to resign.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," OpenAI stated.

Political Context

This announcement arrives after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would mandate the US justice department to make public its files on the case.

The legislation will then move to the desk of the White House for signature. Trump has said he intends to approve the measure, after changing his stance on the matter following pressure from his followers.

Message Details

A group of Epstein-connected emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced several prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The messages revealed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often attempting to link the official to prominent global figures.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, the former official said he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to continue corresponding with the financier".

He continued that he desired "to rebuild trust and mend relationships with the individuals most important to me".

Previous Positions

Summers occupied senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He presided over the institution from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When declaring his departure from public commitments previously on Monday, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following his statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive research organization in DC where he was a prominent member, confirmed that he was not affiliated with the organization.

Summers became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
