Delving into the World's Most Haunted Woodland: Twisted Trees, UFOs and Chilling Accounts in Transylvania.

"Locals dub this place a mysterious vortex of Transylvania," remarks a local guide, the air from his lungs forming wisps of vapor in the cold night air. "So many people have disappeared here, some say there's a gateway to another dimension." This expert is escorting a traveler on a evening stroll through what is often described as the world's most haunted forest: Hoia-Baciu, a square mile of primeval local woods on the fringes of the metropolis of Cluj-Napoca.

A Long History of the Unexplained

Reports of unusual events here date back centuries – this woodland is titled for a regional herder who is reportedly went missing in the long ago, along with 200 of his sheep. But Hoia-Baciu achieved worldwide fame in 1968, when a military technician known as Emil Barnea photographed what he reported as a unidentified flying object hovering above a oval meadow in the centre of the forest.

Numerous entered this place and failed to return. But don't worry," he continues, facing the visitor with a grin. "Our guided walks have a perfect safety record."

In the years that followed, Hoia-Baciu has brought in yogis, traditional medicine people, UFO researchers and supernatural researchers from across the world, curious to experience the unusual forces reported to reverberate through the forest.

Current Risks

Despite being a top global hotspots for supernatural fans, the forest is facing danger. The western suburbs of Cluj-Napoca – a modern tech hub of a population exceeding 400,000, described as the Silicon Valley of the region – are advancing, and construction companies are pushing for approval to clear the trees to construct residential buildings.

Aside from a small area home to area-specific specific tree species, the grove is not officially protected, but the guide hopes that the organization he co-founded – the Hoia-Baciu Project – will help to change that, motivating the government officials to acknowledge the forest's significance as a visitor destination.

Eerie Encounters

While branches and fall foliage snap and crunch beneath their shoes, the guide tells numerous traditional stories and reported paranormal happenings here.

  • One famous story describes a young child going missing during a group gathering, then to return half a decade later with complete amnesia of what had happened, without aging a day, her attire lacking the smallest trace of dust.
  • Regular stories describe cellphones and photography gear mysteriously turning off on entering the woods.
  • Reactions include full-blown dread to moments of euphoria.
  • Some people claim noticing bizarre skin irritations on their arms, detecting disembodied whispers through the forest, or feel palms pushing them, although convinced they're by themselves.

Research Efforts

Although numerous of the tales may be hard to prove, there is much clearly observable that is certainly unusual. Everywhere you look are plants whose trunks are warped and gnarled into bizarre configurations.

Multiple explanations have been proposed to explain the misshapen plants: powerful storms could have altered the growth, or typically increased radiation levels in the ground explain their strange formation.

But research studies have discovered inconclusive results.

The Famous Clearing

The expert's excursions permit participants to participate in a small-scale research of their own. As we approach the meadow in the forest where Barnea took his well-known UFO images, he hands the traveler an EMF meter which detects electromagnetic fields.

"We're stepping into the most powerful section of the forest," he comments. "Discover what's here."

The trees immediately cease as they step into a flawless round. The single plant life is the low vegetation beneath our feet; it's clear that it's naturally occurring, and seems that this unusual opening is organic, not the result of people.

The Blurred Line

This part of Romania is a location which fuels fantasy, where the division is unclear between reality and legend. In countryside villages belief persists in strigoi ("screamers") – otherworldly, appearance-altering creatures, who emerge from tombs to haunt local communities.

The novelist's famous fictional vampire is always connected with Transylvania, and Bran Castle – a Saxon monolith perched on a stone formation in the Carpathian Mountains – is heavily promoted as "the vampire's home".

But even myth-shrouded Transylvania – actually, "the place beyond the forest" – feels real and understandable in contrast to these eerie woods, which give the impression of being, for reasons related to radiation, climatic or purely mythical, a center for human imaginative power.

"Inside these woods," Marius states, "the division between truth and fantasy is very thin."
