Bellingham Must Drop the Immature behavior to Reclaim a Key Position With Tuchel.
For Bellingham to aims to fight his way back into the English top squad, he would be wise to eliminate the unnecessary reactions. His response after noticing that the substitute board was about to come up following a night of inconsistency in the match against Albania was unacceptable.
"I’d rather not overstate it but I stand by my words 'conduct is crucial' and consideration for the teammates who come in," stated Tuchel. "Choices are taken and you have to accept it as a player."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no need for a strop. Kane had recently scored to make the national team two goals ahead in a meaningless fixture, there were six minutes left and Bellingham, following an inconsistent display, was just shown a yellow for bringing down an opponent. It was not a controversial substitution. Actually it would have been unwise for Tuchel to not substitute him because it was possible the midfielder would rule himself out of the first match of the World Cup by getting a another booking.
Shifting Focus to Himself
But Bellingham made himself the center of attention. It was impossible to miss the young midfielder's frustration upon understanding that he was going to make way for another player. He flung his arms in the air and although he exchanged a handshake while heading to the sideline it was clear that the head coach did not appreciate it.
Here lies the test facing Bellingham. He congratulated his teammate for providing the assist for the captain to score his second goal, but his other actions was harmful to his cause. There was no chance complaining was going to reverse the substitution. The German has stressed repeatedly respecting team hierarchies and the importance of acting professionally.
In the Spotlight
The midfielder, left out of the previous squad, has been under scrutiny after returning to the squad in the current camp. Practically he has been on trial and he hasn't helped his case with his response to his substitution as England rounded off a flawless qualification run by seeing off a feisty challenge from their opponents.
The Coach's Plan
This implies opinions are divided on how the squad function at their best including Bellingham. The evidence here was open to interpretation. Tuchel tried new things from Tuchel in the beginning. Under him, England have gained the squad a clear system in recent months, using a holding player, a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and out-and-out wingers, but there was a different feel against Albania. Quansah was given his first cap, Wharton started for the first time for England and the positioning of John Stones as a makeshift midfielder gave a passing resemblance to the Manchester club's team that won three trophies.
Inconsistent Display
Bellingham was a mixed bag. He set up a shot for Eze in the latter period but frequently appeared trying too hard. He made many rushed, misplaced passes. There was a needless bit of aggro against an opponent in the early stages. England were ragged during most of the second period. One Albania chance came after Bellingham gave the ball away. His booking came after he lost the ball by Broja and brought down the attacker.
Squad Strength Shows
In the end England’s depth was decisive. The coach brought on Phil Foden, who appeared more comfortable to the role that Bellingham had played earlier in the match, and Saka. Later Saka provided a set-piece for the captain to open the scoring. This served as a reminder that dead-ball situations will be crucial next summer.
Connection Remains
Still, though, the focus was on Bellingham. The quality of Rashford's cross for Kane’s header was somewhat overlooked amid the drama of the Rogers substitution. After the final whistle, all eyes were on Bellingham. The coach approached behind him and guided Bellingham towards the away supporters. The bond between them is not broken. The coach isn't ready to give up on the player just yet. But if the coach is prepared to offer him the central position is not guaranteed.
