Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
