At least 64 people were killed in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's records.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. In excess of 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations broke out when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with gunfire, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Local authorities said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
